FRENEMIES is a fun, fast read. Megan Crane says it didn’t start out that way.
We met today in the manager’s office of a Borders in the Portland Oregon area. Megan revealed that her first draft of the book was rejected by her editor as too dark — it was about friends who turn on each other. So, Megan pulled the few parts in her manuscript that were funny and sarcastic and built an entirely new book.
She doesn’t plot, she says, but follows her characters. In this case, a slightly sarcastic Augusta who is just about to turn thirty maneuvers her way through the passionate and charged events when her best friend takes her boyfriend and is not the slightest remorseful about doing so.
And, no, it’s not based on Megan’s experiences…although there was the time that she wanted to fire all her friends. She got over it.
